Effect of Ta Content on Microstructure and Properties of (Ti,W)C-Based Cermets

(Ti,W)C-based cermets are an ideal material for the preparation of high-performance cutting tools due to their excellent mechanical properties, high temperature oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, lower toughness limits application tools. In order solve problem low faced by current materials used in tools, this study, a (Ti,W)C solid solution was as hard phase prepare with via vacuum sintering. The effects Ta content on composition, morphology, microstructure were analyzed through XRD analysis SEM EDS characterization methods. properties such hardness, transverse fracture strength, resistance HNO3 also investigated. results show that solution-based exhibit simpler core-rim (single-rim) acyclic structures, which weaken formation propagation cracks at interface. relative density grain size increases decreases, respectively, greater amount addition, while excessive addition leads decrease agglomeration between grains. cermet 3 wt.% possessed Vickers rupture 13 GPa, 1907.4 MPa, 15.5 MPa m1/2, respectively. Ta-rich protective layer surface under acidic solution, increase content, gradually improves.
